Music Magazines

  • Analyse the media language of MOJO and the BBC magazine.
  • Make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently to fit different kinds of music. (15)
In these 2 magazines the main two artists are presented very differently, this is because of the way they are presenting very different kinds of music as in MOJO it is Rock whereas in BBC it is about Classical music. Firstly in the MOJO magazine the main artist, The Cure, who is a glam Rockstar, who is clearly, edited, covered in makeup and has his hair looking all crazy, this is because he is your usual punk star with a white face and lots of colours like blue and red, but the most prominent it the powerful white makeup to show defined feature like his jaw bone whereas in the BBC magazine the boy Sheku Kanneh Mason is a younger boy who is a the BBC Young Musician winner which you would not usually expect to be in a BBC as it is for the older generation, which this child is not he is a much younger star, this shows that just because a magazine is made to fit different kinds of audiences they can use  a different type of star, he is a bright young rising star, he played at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, he comes from a family of soloists, he is clearly much younger because of the way he is smiling, his energy, his stance in a young mature one and the clothes he is wearing are smart and basic meaning that you would not usually expect a young man on an elderly persons magazine, this shows that they wanted to put him there because of his maturity and level of greatness.

Secondly the two front covers use different types of colour schemes and the way the writing is presented, for example in the MOJO magazine the words THE CURE and slowly crumbing and are flaky along with the words ROBERT SMITH showing that they are falling apart, not only this the album name is "Why Can't I be you" showing how utterly broken they are, whereas in the BBC magazine it is much neater and not as in your face compared to the MOJO one, secondly the writing is much neater and is a more formal font than the one in MOJO, not only this the MOJO magazine for the most part has a very obvious colour scheme, which is grey and blue with a tint of red. Showing that the bits that are in red like his eyes they really want to pop out and expose themselves to the reader showing that it is a music magazine, whereas in the BBC magazine it is a very simple front cover with your casual writing and your nothing that really is in your face.

In conclusion the two music magazines use very different types of media to convey their point of what time of magazine they are along with what way they are presenting the people in them, one a well known rock star the other an upcoming future artist. For example the added lighting in the MOJO one whereas there is none added in the BBC one. Not only this buy they layoutsare very different, in the MOJO one its all over the place whereas the BBC one it is all neaat and prestigious.
